EVENT VISIT: CONID ANTWERPPEN & MORE

EVENT VISIT: CONID ANTWERPPEN & MORE
Last week I was invited to the Conid Antwerppen & More event (more specifically the exposition opening on friday evening). An invite to an exposition of a Belgian pen brand? Heck yea! So of course I brought my camera along to provide some coverage of the event! The Antwerppen & More event was officially held saturday 21st, but the exposition remains open until august 17th. The Conid Website has all the information you need if you would like to visit.

In the past few years, Conid used to organize an 'open factory' day once a year (read my coverage of a couple years back). However this year, with the release of the new AntwerpPen (read my review of this new pen collection here), they decided to do something different, and the Antwerppen & More event was born.

Simply put, the Antwerppen & More event is a small exhibition, held in the heart of Antwerp. All production pens are presented, including earlier (and sold-out) limited editions like the stunning 'In Flanders Fields' or Cappucino fountain pens #drool.

Probably the most incredible pen on display, is the collaboration between Conid and AP Limited Editions (If you're into really exclusive pens, this brand might be worth a look!), incorporating a modern Conid filling system into a handmade urushi and Maki-E fountain pen!

But on top of that, the museum also showcased a fantastic selection of prototypes, made by Francis Goosens ('Fountainbel', the inventor of the Bulkfiller filling system). These one-offs in various exciting materials (did someone say ARCO!?!) were mouthwatering to gaze upon, yet unfortunately not for sale (at least for now...).

Conid presented three host speakers. Dennis Leemans, Patrick Andersen and Jan van den Nieuwenhuijzen each told a story of how they and/or their businesses tie in with Antwerp and the values behind Conid. If one thing, Conid is VERY proud of their roots, and with good reason of course.

Additionally, a brand new pen was announced: the Cavens pen. Named after Jozef Cavens, an ex-teacher, this pen honors his work in elementary school, where he taught over 800 children to read and write. Jozef also collected and exchanged writing excercise books from his students and students from all over the world. With a collection of almost 100 books, he cataloged and spread knowledge about handwriting with other teachers. The Cavens pen is a Slimline pen made from matte black Juma 'Snakeskin' resin, topped off with a red resin band below the cap finial and black titanium trims.

Werner Helsen made a brief appearance too, even though it was just to return someone's lost phone. Even though he is the boss-man, Werner is delightfully selfless and enjoys putting his team and the products he makes, first!
Oh, and the Conid Kingsize CAISO (cap activated ink shut-off) makes its return! #excite!

Vigorous testing going on
What a great evening! Despite the blazing heat, I had a great time meeting friends -old and new-, and drooling at beautiful pens of course! Big thanks to Conid for inviting me.

MY FAVORITES OF 2017

The year has come to an end! So to close off 2017, here are some of my favorite products that I discovered this past year. I try out and review A TON of products each year, but these products just stood out from the crowd.

To give credits where credits are due, I completely stole this idea from Ed Jelley (edjelley.com) who is arguably the master of Lists and Buying Guides! Go check out his blog!

1. FRARA ROAD LEATHER PEN ROLL

My favorites of 2017: Frara Road Leather Pen Roll
The Frara Road Pen Roll has literally been by my side ever since I got it in for review back in August! It's a well-made and beautiful leather product made by a small South African brand. This wrap-style of carrying case is new to me, and it. just. works. The form factor is easy to carry, albeit a bit large, but it still manages to fit in my backpack without any issues. The leather quality is amazing, and it can carry six pens safely. Everywhere I took it with me, people commented on it and wanted to know where to get one. Perhaps this is my favourite product of the year. Period.

2. ENSSO PIUMA

My favorites of 2017: Ensso Piuma fountain pen
MINIMALIST. MACHINED. METAL. Those are perhaps the three keywords that best describe 2017 for me. Pens like the Namisu Nova, Karaskustoms EDK, Baron Fig Squire, Kaweco Brass Sport and perhaps my favorite: The Ensso Piuma! These metal pens have made up a big part of my daily carry in the past year. I just love the solid feeling, and solid performance they deliver. And as a chemist, the metallurgy behind the different metals fascinates me.

The Ensso Piuma jump out from the rest because they were just so well-designed and well-made. It's not as easy to make a minimal product as people may  think, and Ensso just hit a homerun with these! The design is as sleek as it gets, but at the same time it's also manages to be a very comfortable writer (something the Namisu Nova -The honorable mention- lacked a bit). On top of that, I also like the #6 Bock nibs that you can find on most of these machined metal pens, which I think are excellent writers (especially the titanium ones are a lot of fun!).

3. PILOT CUSTOM 823

My favourites of 2017: Pilot Custom 823 fountain pen
High-end Pilot pens like the 823 often get flak for being boring and uninspired designs. And while that may be true -The design of the 823 is about as classic as it gets-, it does provide a seriously impressive writing experience. The 823 is a pen you can write with non-stop. It's comfortable, smooth, reliable and it has an ink capacity that will last you several days of intense use. I got mine with a medium nib, and while I generally think medium nibs are boring, this is the most amazing boring medium I've used in a long while!

True, this pen won't win beauty contests, and it may not win your heart because of that. But it's undeniably a first-class workhorse of a pen.

4. ROBERT OSTER SIGNATURE INKS

My favorites of 2017: Robert Oster Signature Inks

2017 Was the year of the inks apparently. A lot of new brands popped up, and my collection got even further out of hand with 57 new bottles (I'm almost ashamed of myself). 15 Of those new additions were from the hand of Australian brand Robert Oster, which is quite a subtle indication of how much I like them. In general, they are solid inks with excellent flow and behaviour. Some of them shade really well, some have killer sheen, and others I like purely for the color itself.

5. FRANKLIN CHRISTOPH MODEL 66 + MUSIC NIB

My favourites of 2017: Franklin-Christoph Model 66 fountain pen
I had been on the lookout for another Franklin-Christoph for a while. Because they are only available in the US, I kept holding off. But then my good friend Janine (@Janinescribbles on Instagram!) went to the DC pen show, and she was kind enough to bring one home for me!

I went for an eye-searingly bright orange Model 66, which is a large desk-type pen. And I absolutely love it to bits! It's a large, quirky pen that grabs the attention. But more importantly, it's an amazing writer. The long, lightweight acrylic pen may not be the most practical to take with you (although it still fits my Visconti Dreamtouch pen cases...barely), but it's very comfortable and easygoing.
My favourites of 2017: Franklin-Christoph Model 66 fountain pen
This pen really sings, especially paired with the Franklin-Christoph Shadow Music nib (a three-tine 1.9mm stub). The music nib really brings the whole experience to the next level. The wet flow from the three tines provides a perfect writing experience, where I feel like other stubs often lack consistency and flow. The line is wide and crisp. I keep it inked up with Ky-No-Oto Yamabuki-Iro which has some of the best shading, and this nib takes full advantage of that.

 6. EDISON PEARLETTE CANYON TRAIL

My favorites of 2017: Edison Pearlette Canyon Trail fountain pen
Top: Edison Collier Burnished Gold, Bottom: Edison Pearlette Canyon Trail.
Last but not least on my list is another semi-bespoke pen brand from the US: Edison! The Edison Collier surprised me last year, and this year again with the new Burnished Gold version (that I reviewed HERE). But my real favourite was the Pearlette. This was a surprise, and kind of an impulse buy at the Tilburg Pen show, but I haven't had the slightest regret!

The Pearlette is a smaller pen, which is the main reason why it flew under my radar in the past. But this year's new Canyon Trail finish is downright mesmerizing. The material has an amazing depth to it, and the size is actually much more comfortable than I thought it would be. It's a bit of an adaptation from what I normally use, but it fits my hand just right (YMMV, of course).

To end this post, first of all: Happy New Year everyone! I wish you all a happy and healthy 2018, filled with pens of course! Thanks also, for reading and supporting my blog. You're awesome, and you're the reason I keep doing this!

I think it's also the perfect time to thank my loyal sponsors for their continued support. These sponsors keep this blog going, and provide products for reviews and giveaways. Go give them a follow on social media, browse their webshops, and don't forget to use the discount codes that some of them provide for readers of The Pencilcase Blog!

Disclaimer: I received some of these products for review. However that doesn't change the fact that I reached for these products the most during the past year, this list is based solely on which products I used and enjoyed most throughout the year. There are no affilate links in this post.

RECAP: INSIGHTS X STATIONERY SHOW 2016

Just like any other industry, stationery and pen brands do their best to announce new products every year. But before the general audience gets to see the novelties, they are introduced to the vendors and stores during so called 'stationery shows'. Basically a huge pen show, but closed for the general public, without direct sales (meaning you can't buy new products directly at the show), and with more than just pens (stationery in the widest sense of the word).
I was lucky to be invited -along with a couple other bloggers- to a blogger meeting at the Nuremberg Insights X stationery show last weekend. It's only the second edition of this particular show, but it already features around 260 brands spread over multiple halls with a combined size of three football fields! Needless to say it was quite an overwhelming experience, but a great one! I met a bunch of interesting brands, both known and unknown (to me), and the people behind those brands of course.
Before the picture overload, I just want to thank the organisation team behind the Insights X expo. I'd also like to thank all the brands that I had the pleasure of talking to, it's impossible to list them all here, but i'd encourage you to visit the exhibitor list on the Insights X website, and check them out for yourself. Last but not least, it was the perfect opportunity to meet some other (pen) bloggers: GourmetPens, SBREBrown, AllThingsStationery and Bleistift!

As I said earlier, it's stationery in the widest sense imaginable, from kids' backpacks to greeting cards and everything in between. The show was split up into six categories: luxury writing, desk acccessories, paper, bags, artist supplies and stationery. Of course I personally spent most time browsing the various pen brand exhibitors, more than enough to explore there. We also visited a couple non-pen brands too of course.

Along with the visit, we were also overloaded with a bunch of goodies and samples of new products. Part of those products were relevant to this blog, and thus will be reviewed at some point. But of course there were also some less interesting products (I'm talking about kids' crafts products, coloring pencils, small toys,...). We didn't really know what to do with these, and it would've been a waste to throw it away, so we decided to donate to the children's department of the mental hospital where my mother works.
But enough talking, I'll leave the rest of this post speak for itself with the pictures I took during the show. It's impossible to pack everything in one post, but here's a selection of what I found most interesting...

KAWECO
Not pictured here are the two novelty colors of the ACsport pens: Orange and green! They did look fantastic in real life though, I assume you'll see them pop up online and in stores in the near future...
'Make your own Kaweco Sport pen', at the Kaweco stand of course!

The Faber-Castell Booth, filled to the brim with new exciting product, I'm especially interested in the new affordable luxury pens, all with the same high-quality steel nibs we're used to from them!

UNI-BALL
Uni-Ball and their ever so popular jetstream pens, available in a bunch of styles and prices.

STABILO

By far the most colorful and playful booth at the show, courtesy of Stabilo
Some interesting new products from Stabilo: Pastell highlighters, woodcased pencils with a slip-on touchscreen pencil cap, and a new learning fountain pen for kids with an adjustable nib.
Also from Stabilo, these colorful neon jumbo triangular woodcased pencils!

Some lesser-known brands were present as well, such as Cleo Skribent with their beautiful luxury fountain pens in exotic materials like ebonite and wood.
Some really impressive luxury Online pens, with a more premium design and finish than the school pens they are most known for.

STAEDTLER
The usual Staedtler Premium product line. Nothing new so far, but I was informed about an upcoming lower-priced premium pen coming in 2017!
...the droolworthy, but also really expensive princeps collection from Staedtler

LABAN
Laban pens were a first for me, hadn't seen their pens in person before and was thoroughly impressed with the wide variety of styles and materials they produce! The vintage ebonite pens lower left were my personal favourite.

Brands like these made up about 60 percent of the show, zipit was one of the most interesting ones, with their pencil cases made from one long zipper.

KUM with their Masterpiece sharpeners, about as fancy as a handheld sharpener will get...

A wall of Leuchtturm notebooks.

ZEBRA
The Zebra stand brought a mechanical pencil with unbreakable leads! You could actualy rip the paper and the lead wouldn't budge, very impressive.

HINDUSTAN PENCIL CO.
The Hindustan pencil company (known for their Natarah pencils) introduced their new subbrand: Sivo. This new brand provides high-quality pencils and school supplies for children.

A novelty for me personally: Scrikss pens from Turkey. They brought some pretty classy designs with them, something worth keeping an eye out for...

PLATINUM
From the other side of the world: Platinum. We were honoured to be able to sit along the table with the Vice President of the brand: Mr. Takeuchi.  The new Nova Orange Platinum Plaisir was present at their booth, but we were more distracted by that handsome Izumo Urokomon in the lower right corner!
